2011 Arafura Games School Participation Programs

ADOPT-A-COUNTRY

The Adopt-a Country program, first introduced in 2007, is aimed at Year 4 to 6  school students and is an initiative of the Arafura Games and the Department of Education and Training (Student Services). Its objective is to increase schools participation in the 2011 Arafura Games and it is designed to promote and encourage cooperative learning, problem solving, healthy lifestyle and physical activity, mutual understanding and cultural practices.

In conjunction with the Education Coordinator for the Arafura Games, schools adopt a country/countries who is/are attending the 2011 Arafura Games. Students are able to research and conduct curriculum based studies into the countries as well as establish educational contact, and meet with and offer support during the time the visitors are participating in the Games. It is anticipated that DET will provide Study Units linked to the NTCF to assist with the delivery of the program.

One of the key elements of the program is the Country Banners, an integral visual part in the Athlete March-Past at the Opening Ceremony. Schools who participate in the Adopt-a-Country program will create a mobile banner depicting features of their adopted country or countries. The banners then lead out their team/s in the Opening Ceremony on Saturday 7 May 2011.

Coordination will also be made available for students to act as Arafura Games volunteer Sports Assistants at the actual games events in and out of schools hours.

Another exciting element of the Adopt-a Country program is Arafura Alive, a lively event which was held at the Marrara Sports precinct in the last week of March.
Students were given the opportunity to “represent” their adopted countries and participated in a series of modified sport games all of which will be occurring later at the Arafura Games.
